The following gives an overview of what to expect from Fiji resorts in general. If you are after suggestions on where to stay, please visit our Fiji Hotel Guide by Region.

There are more than 50 holiday beach resorts in Fiji. Some Fiji resorts occupy tiny coral islands whilst others are sit alongside a small cove beach with the rainforest on its doorstep and far from human civilisation. There are several large International hotel chains in Fiji including Sheraton and Outrigger although these are located on the main island of Viti Levu and have less than ideal beach locations. Most resorts in Fiji are quite small and have an intimate atmosphere, many with just a dozen or so beach bungalows. There are even a handful of the most exlusive small resorts in the world. All Fiji resorts pride themselves on their intimacy and natural surroundings. Many resorts offer bure style accommodation - individual open plan bungalows built from natural materials to reflect the traditional Fijian home. Bures have thatch roofs, high ceilings and wooden beams. Some of the more exquisite bures have bamboo walls and wooden beams held together by woven coconut rope.

Most beach resorts in Fiji have plenty of water activities from snorkelling / diving expeditions, children's clubs, sea kayaks and catamarans and sunset bars for cocktails. Most resorts provide entertainment at night which include fire torching, Yaqona ceremonies, traditional dances (mekes) and serenading. Nightclubs are not that popular although the larger Fiji resorts do have some live bands which play a mix of local reggae and love songs.

Because most resorts are quite isolated, all have their own restaurants. Only a few places in Fiji offer self-catering, mostly in Nadi and Suva, with a few places along the Coaral Coast and on the Northern Island of Taveuni. Independent restaurants outside of the towns are few and far between. Fresh fish and seafood are usually on the menu along with the ever popular burger and chips. The very luxury resorts naturally offer gourmet food with international chefs but otherwise dining in Fiji is quite basic. There aren't many local dishes on offer. The exception is kokoda (chunks of fish marinated in lime and coconut milk) and the lovo - a feast of pigs and local rootcrops cooked in an underground earth oven.

Fiji prides itself on the friendliness of its people despite its recent political instability. Fijian hotel staff are always smiling, are good conversationalists and are excellent with children. Their natural charm brings holiday-makers back to the same resort year after year. Guests are invited to story-telling, bush walks, volleyball on the beach or even to make a visit to the local village. Most resorts have yaqona ceremonies to bring guests and hosts together for conversation and have nightly entertainment of traditional dances and drinking cocktails at sunset.
