![]() Fiji Travel Vision Beaches in Fiji Some of the beaches in fiji rank as the best in the South Pacific - here we review the beach potential in all of the ten regions of the Fiji Islands
Viti Levu Beaches Not great for beaches. Much of the coast is mangrove forests and consequently where beaches appear they are often muddy. The exception is the Coral Coast which has the best stretch of beaches on Viti Levu and some of the resorts have beautifully manicured white sandy beaches with palm trees and lagoons where snorkelling and swimming is much better. Nananu-i-Ra Island off the North Coast of Viti Levu has great beaches for beachcombing. Unfortunately, the waters around most parts of Viti Levu are not that good for snorkelling due to exposed and consequently dead reefs at low tide. Most resorts offer snorkelling trips by boat to better offshore coral reefs. The beaches around Nadi are disappointing. They are neither attractive to look at, the sand being slightly muddy from the nearby mangrove forests, and are without atmosphere (no bars, cafes or activity centres). The best beach around Nadi is on Denarau Island, a five minute drive from the town centre, but only because the Sheraton keep it topped up with imported white sand. About 20 mins to the north of Nadi is Vuda Point. There's a nice beach for walking along around Veseisei village and a quite sandy spot for relaxing at First Landing Resort. nadi area accommodation Natadola beach is considered the best in Viti Levu. The sand is fine and white but the surroundings are sparse. There are no amenities at the beach, so if you want a drink, bring your own. Sometimes the beach is crowded with busloads of locals on a day out. Unless you like bodysurfing, which is good, the beach alone is not worth the journey. The Coral Coast has the best stretch of coastline on Viti Levu. However, the beaches are only average by Fiji's standards, although they are still considered good Internationally. The main problem with the beaches is at low tide when it is impossible to swim due to exposed dead coral. The larger resorts (Outrigger, Warwick and Naviti) have lagoons so this is not a problem. The best beaches for beachcombing (wild and remote) are east of Korolevu. coral coast accommodation Suva does not have a beach and there are only a few half-decent beaches along the entire eastern coast. suva area accommodation Nananu-i-Ra Island off the north coast of Viti Levu has six very good beaches amidst pleasant tropical surroundings. There are several small independent resorts on the island, all with a very laid-back atmosphere. The island can be walked around in a day making it an excellent destination for beachcombing. north coast accommodation back to the top Mamanuca Beaches The Mamanuca group of islands, clearly visible from the west coast of the main island, is Fiji's vacation playground. The group consists of a dozen or so small volcanic islands and many more tiny coral atolls. There are plenty of excellent beaches throughout the islands, especially those alongside the island resorts which have sunset bars, restaurants and lots of water activities. Resorts clean their beaches every morning to keep them free of dead coral pieces and seaweed that get washed up. The sea surrounding the islands is sublime: its colours are gorgeous and it's beautifully warm, excellent for snorkelling and diving, and full of sea life. Volcanic Islands Malolo Lailai has one of the best beaches in the region - a long stretch of fine white sand and palm trees between the two resorts on the island. The views of the bay and yacht club are stunning. It is possible to wade across to neighbouring Malolo Island, the largest island in the Mamanuca Group. Malolo has some good cove beaches, a pleasant resort beach and several local villages where shells are sold. Castaway Island has a nice sandy beach alongside its resort, hedged in by a rocky coastline. The island's coast is otherwise quite rugged. Mana Island has two good beaches. The beach alongside the resort is a hive of activity with water-skiing, parasailing, bars and even a submersible for viewing the coral without getting wet. The beach on the north side of the island is much quieter and has excellent views of neighbouring islands. Mana island can be walked around in a couple of hours making it an excellent destination for beachcombing. Tokoriki Island Resort has probably the nicest long sandy beach in the group with fine white sand and steep tropical hills as a backdrop. Matamanoa Island has a nice sandy beach almost all the way around the tiny volcanic island. It is blocked on the western tip by a large protruding rock which is home to several bird species. Uninhabited Yanuya Island has a beautiful deserted beach with stunning rocks as a backdrop. Some resorts, as well as seaplane and helicopter tours, can take you there for a picnic. Coral Islands South Sea Island, Daydream and Tivua (day tours), and Treasure, Beachcomber, Navini, Namotu and Tavarua (resorts) are all small coral islands that can be walked around in under five minutes. As far as beaches go they are beautiful to marvel at, excellent for swimming and snorkelling off, but too restrictive for the beachcomber. The resort islands make sure there's enough for tourists to do with kayaking, sailing and other watersports on offer. Off Treasure Island, a tiny sandbank is exposed at low tide and makes an interesting spot for visiting. mamanuca accommodation back to the top Yasawa Beaches Excellent remote sweeping beaches and secluded lagoons - the best beaches in Fiji for exploring and daydreaming. In all parts of the Yasawa Group you will easily find a white sandy beach that is yours for the day. Vomo Island has a good beach circling most of the island with a huge outcrop of rock sealing the southern tip. The Sheraton Resort there is quite luxurious. Waya and Waya Lailai both have excellent beaches and lagoons with impressive backdrops of sheer volcanic peaks. Naviti, Yaqeta and Matacawalevu Islands all have good beaches but are overshadowed by its neighbours. Tavewa, Nanuya Levu and Nanuya Lailai all have excellent beaches that are typically South Pacific- tranquil white beaches backed by endless coconut trees. Exclusive Turtle Island Resort on Nanuya Levu can even offer each of its 14 couples with their own private beach for the day. Yasawa Island in the far north has the most impressive large sweeping beaches and turquoise lagoons in the country, including that at Yasawa Island Resort. What's more, the sand is extremely fine and almost white. Some beaches are the venue of expensive cruise itineraries; others seldom visited except by local villagers. yasawa accommodation back to the top Southern Islands Some good beaches in secluded tropical surroundings but much of the islands' coastline is rugged and inaccessible. Vatulele has several excellent sweeping white sandy beaches including the one alongside the resort as well as small cove beaches for privacy. Guests will also be taken on request to Nooki Nooki Island, a tiny limestone outcrop that encloses a tiny beach with a couple of coconut trees - excellent for complete seclusion. Kadavu has many good beaches although most are quite inaccessible. The beaches alongside all the small resorts are quite good and most will have local trails through the rainforest to nearby secluded beaches. Yanuca has several good beaches including those where the two surf camps have set up. Beqa Island is mostly rugged. southern islands accommodation back to the top Northern Islands Taveuni, for all its charm, does not boast the best beaches in Fiji. Lavena beach on the east coast is probably the best on the island. A handful of nice beaches are located within walking distance of Matei Airport including the popular Prince Charles Beach. The best beaches in the area are around the three small islands (Qamea, Matangi and Laucala) off the north-east coast of Taveuni Vanua Levu, like Taveuni, has more to offer in its views of bays and the rainforest than for its beaches and much of the coastline is mangrove forest. There are several islands off both southern and northern Vanua Levu that have excellent beaches with small exclusive resorts. The beaches on Rabi and Kioa are rather dull apart from the local village atmosphere. northern islands accommodation back to the top Lomaiviti Toberua Island has a nice beach alongside the resort at high tide but as the sea retreats it leaves a huge tidal flat - the islands 9-hole golf course. Naigani Island has some excellent tropical beaches to explore including those alongside the resort. Leluvia and Caqalai Islands are small sandy coral islands, both with accommodation, and can be walked around in under 10 minutes. Excursions to the remote beaches on Moturiki can be arranged. Wakaya Island boasts pristine white beaches for its private guests. Ovalau's only notable beach has sand not quite black enough to make it spectacular. Koro and Gau both have good beaches scattered around but getting to them is difficult as there is no official accommodation on either island and no public transport. lomaiviti accommodation back to the top Lau Group The Lau Group is a mass of small islands scattered amongst a vast ocean. Sailors will have no problem finding secluded beaches but for everyone else it is difficult getting there. Vanua Balavu, which is open to tourism, lacks any good beaches but the Bay of Islands does provide a few excellent sandy coves. Lakeba, also with accommodation, has better beaches including the excellent stretch along Nukusalai point. lau group accommodation back to the top Rotuma Rotuma is a beach lovers paradise with over a dozen beaches of outstanding natural beauty all within a days walk. The drawback is the islands remoteness and the lack of accommodation - here it is homestay accommodation only. Oinafa Bay has a fine and almost white sandy beach. The bay is shallow with a sandy bottom and is excellent for playing around and body surfing. Juju Beach is set within a shallow lagoon, making it an idyllic location. Vaioa Beach is set away from any village and is seldom visited. It is my favourite beach in Fiji with excellent sand, thick vegetation with hardwood trees and coconut palms that reach over the sea and an impressive sheer rock wall to one side. Body surfing and snorkelling are also good. The excellent palm-fringed beaches at Fapufa and Losa are both set alongside small pretty villages. At Fapufa, there is an impressive view and walk along the coastline where the sea crashes into the black volcanic rocks. Motusa point is a 2km S-shaped stretch of brilliant beachfront and coconut groves. back to the top
