Introduction

Nadi is the stepping stone for tourism in Fiji. Unfortunately, it is a rather disappointing sprawl of suburban satellite towns set slightly inland from an unattractive beach. There are few attractions apart from the views of the distant mountains and a colourful Hindu temple at the furthest point of Town. Nadi Town itself is architecturally bland and its local market rather shabby. The only draw is its shops - plenty of cheap shirts and local handcrafts and the cocktail bars and traditional dance performances provided by some of the larger resort hotels.

The only decent beach around Nadi is on the reclaimed mangrove island of Denarau - now supporting a championship golf course, marina, yacht club and three Sheraton operated resorts. Denarau Island is easy to get to being connected to the mainland by a small bridge and is a five minute drive from Nadi Town. Unfortunately the sea off Denarau is not nearly as clear as it is around most places in Fiji and so snorkelling is not great. The mangrove corridors around Denarau are excellent for exploring by small boat and ShotoverJet Fiji run thrill rides from the Marina

The real charm of this dry western side of the island is the mountain ranges inland from Nadi and Lautoka. Koroyanitu National Park offers overnight hikes through semi-rainforest to some excellent vantage points, waterfalls and small villages. Day trips to the Garden of the Sleeping Giant are also very popular for the ornamental orchids on display together with forest walks through botanical wonders. There are many tour operators offering trips to the Nausori Highlands, historical Veseisei village, and Fiji's second largest city of Lautoka.

Once at Nadi, getting around by taxi and bus is extremely cheap. Alternatively, all the major car-hire companies and a few local ones as well are located at the airport.
