Introduction Three large islands and several smaller ones lie to the south of Viti Levu. The closest of these are Vatulele and Beqa. Vatulele has one of the finest luxury resorts in Fiji as well as some unique features, notably its cliffs with rock paintings near the resort, the sacred red prawns, an uninhabited islet which is a sanctuary for nesting boobies, and the village tapa-cloth makers (used for traditional handcrafts). Beqa has several picturesque fishing villages as well as being home to the Fijian firewalkers. Homestay tourism has recently been developed on Beqa with daily guided tours of the islands attractions. Kadavu, the southern most island in the group, is the third largest island in Fiji. Kadavu is renowned for its exceptional diving along the 30 km long Astrolabe Reef and for adventure tourism. The island is volcanic, extremely rugged in places, and covered in rainforest. This makes it rich to explore with excellent treks to waterfalls and vistas and a wealth of tropical flora and wildlife including musk parrots and other rare birds. On the downside, there are few roads on the island and getting around the rugged coastline by boat can be inconvenient and somewhat expensive. Accommodation in the Southern Islands back to the top Getting There Passenger Ferries Depart weekly from Suva for Kadavu Small local fishing boat Depart frequently for Beqa and Vatulele from Navua. There is also an airstrip on Vatulele for chartered flights. A passenger ferry leaves Suva Harbour for Ono and the east tip of Kadavu twice a week. Local fishing boats depart from Navua near Pacific Harbour for both Beqa and Yanuca as demand dictates. Vatulele is also close enough to be reached by local fishing boat from Sigatoka or Navua.
