Lau Travel Guide
The vast Lau Group is one region where it is difficult to move about due to lack of transport. Only a few cargo boats visit the group each month, so it's up to local fishermen to ferry you from island to island. There are a couple of guesthouses on Lakeba (in the south) and Vanua Balavu (in the north). The islands are all quite small and good for exploring. The Lau group has a distinct culture with a strong influence from Tonga which lie just to the east. Villages are very traditional here. The Lauans are renowned for their wood carving and masi paintings. You are unlikely to come across any other travellers.
Getting to Lau Group
Air Fiji flew to Cicia , Vanua Balavu, Lakeba up to mid 2002 but the route has recently be stopped due to continual loss of money by the airline and lack of government support.
The only way to get to the Lau Group is by cargo boast which leave sporadically from Suva.
